Chapter Seven

WHO THE HELL WAS ROMAN Daniels?

Rob searched his memory banks, trying to figure out if he’d heard of the guy before. With the casual display of wealth around them, and the fact the dude seemed to actually own this island, Rob should have at least heard his name at some point. Even Red River didn’t deal with movers-and-shakers of this level. But he was still drawing a blank.

They sat at a natural-stone breakfast bar eating thick turkey sandwiches and rehydrating. Daniels stood opposite them, his back to the countertop and massive refrigerator. Rob swallowed his last bite and sat back in his chair.

Miranda had introduced herself right before the food was put on the table but had left out the part about being part of Art Crimes, so they were all dancing right now, and he was getting tired of the cha-cha.

He looked at Miranda and gave her a move-it-on gesture with his hand beneath the bar. She looked at him, then shrugged in response, which he took as the go-ahead to get the ball rolling.

“Listen, Daniels,” he began. “I was acting as a transport captain for the yacht down below. It belongs to Zac Sheldon,” he stopped short at the grimace of distaste on the man’s face. So he knew Sheldon, huh? “It’s kind of a long story, but this is the second time the Sweet Dreams has been taken. Sheldon, who is a complete idiot, had a Monet and Banksy on board, along with all kinds of other stuff. Miranda and I got the boat back, and then Sheldon hired me to take the yacht to Miami.” Rob took a swig of water. “We got the paintings off, and then were boarded again, down in your cay. We think the pirates are after something much more valuable, something that’s more of a legend than actual fact.”

Miranda gave him a sour look. But he wasn’t wrong.

He’d expected that tantalizing the man with the Picasso would get him to open up. Or something. He was wrong.

“So why didn’t you just call for help from the Coast Guard?” Roman crossed his arms, had a blank look on his face again.

“They’re jamming all cell reception,” Miranda said. “They had a jammer the first time they boarded us as well. I turned it over to the Coasties, but obviously they have another one.”

Roman stiffened. “They’re using a cell jammer?”

Miranda nodded, and he cursed in response. “Well, that explains a few things.”

“So now we’re pretty sure they’re after us to eliminate us,” Miranda said matter-of-factly. “We were hoping for strength in numbers, that if we made it to the construction site they wouldn't dare to eliminate an entire crew.”

Roman looked hard at Miranda. “Good idea. Ballsy, but good idea.”

“So Roman,” Rob said. “If you don’t mind me asking, who the hell are you?”

Roman just stared at him, with that thousand-yard stare he imagined warriors had.

“Let’s just say I’m in private enterprise, like you.”

Nice non-answer, Rob thought, but didn’t say anything. Next to him Miranda snorted in response.
